Performance analysis of Slotted CSMA/CA MAC protocol under different parameters for static IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Sensor Networks Amol Patel and Raksha Upadhyay Institute of Engineering and Technology Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya Indore (M.P.), India _______________________________________________________________________________________ AbstractWSNs have emerged as an important area for research and development because of its application in monitoring and tracking. This paper, presents and discuss the performance of slotted CSMA/CA MAC protocol for static WSNs, with only minor add-ons to the protocol by tuning its parameter adequately. The performance of the slotted CSMA/CA MAC protocol is evaluated and analyzed for different network configurations to understand the impact of the protocol parameters such as super frame order, beacon order, back off exponent, frame size and CSMA/CA overheads on the network performance, namely in terms of throughput, average delay and energy consumed by the network. The proposed work is implemented on Qualnet 5.0.2 Network Simulator and the performance of CSMA/CA MAC protocol is evaluated for static WSNs. KeywordsWireless Sensor Network (WSN), Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) , Back-off Exponent (BE), Medium access control (MAC) etc. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Improving the IEEE 802.15.4 Slotted CSMA/CA MAC for Time-Critical Events in Wireless Sensor Networks

In beacon-enabled mode, IEEE 802.15.4 is ruled by the slotted CSMA/CA Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. The standard slotted CSMA/CA mechanism does not provide any means of differentiated services to improve the quality of service for timecritical events (such as alarms, time slot reservation, PAN management messages etc.). In this paper, we present and discuss practical service differentia...

Study on Additional Carrier Sensing for IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard are able to achieve low-power transmissions in the guise of low-rate and short-distance wireless personal area networks (WPANs). The slotted carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is used for contention mechanism. Sensor nodes perform a backoff process as soon as the clear channel assessment (CCA) detects a b...

MAC throughput limit analysis of slotted CSMA/CA in IEEE 802.15.4 WPAN

IEEE 802.15.4 low-rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) are expected to provide ubiquitous networking between small personal/home devices and sensors with low power consumption and low cost features. The technology employs special CSMA/CA to save power consumption for batterypowered small or portable WPAN devices. In this letter, we present a new model for the slotted CSMA/CA of IEEE 802....

Multi-channel Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

Extensive researches on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been performed and many techniques have been developed for the data link (MAC) layer. Most of them assume single-channel MAC protocols. In the usual dense deployment of the sensor networks, single-channel MAC protocols may be deficient because of radio collisions and limited bandwidth. Hence, using multiple channels can significantly ...
